WinoFly – old windows with flies
A fly flew. All the insect flies flew. A warm breeze wafted in. The game is ready! It's a simple shooter like Galaxian. You move left and right and shoot at enemies. With a ton of insect sprites. I love drawing! And the Windows 3.11 theme as the background and window decoration.
Each level
consists of three waves of enemies. The enemy lines up. A line is made up of
five flies. And there can be up to five such lines in later levels. The
difficulty gradually increases. Enemies sometimes shoot. Rarely. In these
pixelated clumps. And about once every seven seconds, one of the insects makes
a special move. It stands on line 6 and makes a square. It describes it. And
then returns to its place.
The game
turned out fun and colorful. The only thing is that the background is white.
It's easier that way. And this is a Windows 3.11 stylization. All the menus are
the same. It's simple. And that's the visual aspect.
It's
amazing that this game will have both music and sounds. During gameplay.
Cheerful 8-bit music and equally cheerful sounds. There are compositions for
the game. And a ton of sounds. Sounds for when the player takes damage, for
when flies perform a special move, and for when flies disappear. There are lots
of sounds, and they are randomly selected.
The game
uses free music. Thanks to the author and musician, Kevin MacLeod, for two
wonderful tracks. In the style of upbeat 8-bit chiptune music. And I created
the sounds myself in Bfxr. It's a very lightweight program for creating sounds
like those on the Dendy or even simpler 8-bit sounds.
I spent a
long time tinkering with the developments for this game. I took the risk of
using third-party libraries for Free Basic. I want to display graphics as PNG,
play music as MP3, and create fonts using True Type. This will be better in the
future. That's why I didn't improve any features in this game. It took a lot of
time to figure out how to connect FB Sound, Free PNG, and FreeType. Before
that, I tried for a long time to connect anything, and it turned out to be very
difficult.
So, these
simple and fun things are what I got this time. A retro pixelated theme and
windows reminiscent of Windows 3.11. In the main menu, you also choose the
screen scale. It's like a shooter. And a vertical screen format. And you can
make the window small, or almost full screen. Use the left and right arrows.
And also
the language selection. The very first screen greets you with a choice of which
language to display everything in. Thanks to True Type fonts for such a
wonderful feature. And you can immediately hear beautiful MP3 files in the main
menu. This is FB Sound at work. Music and in-game sounds play simultaneously!
And all the sprites are PNG images. It's convenient, modern, and compact.
Thanks go to FbPng for that. These are all the different libraries integrated
into Free Basic. This is the first successful attempt!
The game
turned out to be quite cheerful... About flies and insects. The theme is
friendly animals. The flies fly. They're all colorful. Sprites. And cheerful
music plays. Fun sounds play from time to time. There are over 10 levels. So
the game will take some time. It's good for relaxation. Just playing and
unwinding. Away from the routine. In the middle of the workday. A game
about old windows with flies.
