Age of Wonders II: The Wizard's Throne – A Time for Magical Memories
I'm sorting through my digital GOG game collection. And I remembered how much I love playing fantasy games. Like Heroes of Might and Magic. And that I've been really interested in this theme for a long time, ever since my Pentium 2 days. What else is out there like that? Well, not exactly, but something interesting about fantasy. What's so interesting?
And then I remembered there's a game called Age of Wonders 2. I remember having that game on disk. The Shadow Magic version. It's essentially two games. Age of Wonders 2: Wizard's Throne and Age of Wonders 2: Shadow Magic.
I've
started with the Wizard's Throne for now. Magic is cool and fun! I've refreshed
my memory of that game. After playing Heroes of Might and Magic IV, I started
looking for more games like it. This one turned out to be the closest in genre
and quality. Especially, the second part.
It has beautiful graphics. Very pixelated. With decent scaling. That is, you can zoom in really close. Everything is pixelated, but it's very interesting to look at everything. And you can zoom out. It's like the zoom increases. Everything becomes small. And somewhere in the middle, there's a very fantasy-like gameplay. The graphics are also unique. And a unique fantasy. Which I really appreciate. Such imagination on the part of the creators.
The graphics are great. And true fantasy. Such tall towers of white cities. All kinds of grass. Forest, field. Paths. Swamp. Water. River. You can also sail on ships here. The game is close to Heroes of Might and Magic, but made in its own way. It has its own approach. Its own strategy. Its own fantasy world. I think it's difficult to make games like this.
It's really interesting to look at the picture. So many details. Everything is growing. Everything is so diverse. It has its own approach to everything. Its own style of construction. Its own bizarre creatures. And different cities. We play as a wizard. And there are story-driven campaigns here too. And you can just play cards.
So, I literally launched the game Wizards Throne just to get acquainted. To remember. I remember. The first level. Yeah, we were unlucky there. And the wizard is running somewhere. He got hit hard there. And it's really interesting to travel around the map like that.
I literally
played for about 10 minutes so far. Just remembered. Launched it. It's good
that it runs on modern Windows 11 systems. The game itself dates back to the
time of the second Pentium, somewhere. I remember playing there in the desert
somewhere on the map.
The maps there seem to have been really long. Or maybe I played really slowly. So, like in a fantasy world. Walking and wandering around the map there. And hesitantly, so carefully, doing what the story required. Defeat another wizard. They seem to be sitting in towers. It enhances their magic.
Fantasy memories came flooding back. About the Age of Wonders. You're playing like this today, but in five years, these will be fantasy memories. About something very exciting. On my day off, it was my time – memories of magic. I'm a fan of fantasy, to be honest. In the form of role-playing games or games like Heroes of Might and Magic. But when you're short on time for computer games, those games are quite difficult. Until you figure out how to play them. Until you get to them.
Here in the first mission. I'm sailing somewhere on a boat. Hiding at the edge of the map. From the evil wizard. And there in the corner of the map, exploring something. The beginning of adventures in the Age of Wonders!
Playing little games. From time to time i like to play videogames. And write about it.
Dima Link is making retro videogames, apps, a little of music, write stories, and some retro more.
